Straight Pool was originally created in the 15th century. It was very popular in America until the 1980s, when it was replaced with eight-ball and nine ball. It was also featured as a character in The Hustler (1961). Jayshaw set the current straight pool record at 714 points in 2022.
There are no limitations on the number and type of object balls that can go in straight pool games. The shooter can pocket any ball that is spotted on the table, unless it is the apex ball. The shooter can pocket a ball in an open position or on a safety, but the pocketing ball does not count as a point. A tie-up ball or dead ball can also be used as a pocket.
Straight pool only allows ten balls per shooter. The shooter will take the cue ball and keep the rest in his pocket. He will then take the last object ball from the table when he is done.
Straight Pool can be played by two people. Straight Pool is played using a standard 15-ball rack. Each player may take one ball and break the other 14 in a set. The game goes to the winner if the player scores the most points.

The opening break in straight pool refers to the shot that is taken first. It is normally a soft break, designed to nick the bottom corner ball off the pack. The cue ball is then rolled over three rails and into the corner of the table where you broke.
