There are many parts to pool tables. The table has a multilayered table top, which is then covered with billiard paper. Some people prefer different colors of cloth to be on their pool tables. This allows for a more personal experience. It also ensures that the playing surface is smooth.

The first part of a pool table is the slate. Slate is a heavy milled rock that is used as the surface of the table. Most pools tables are made of either 1" or 3/4" slate. It is worth checking the size of the table before you buy.

The rails are another vital part of a pool table. Rails can either be made of synthetic materials or natural ging. They are attached to the slate to provide support and glue. The rail may be made of solid wood in some cases. Other materials include fibreboard and plywood.

Cushions protect rails from damage and prevent them from becoming damaged. Cushions can be made from vulcanized rubber, cloth or both. These cushions are interchangeable with rails.

The top rail is a shorter rail that is attached to the top of the table. Side rails are shorter and run the length of a pool table. Cross beams can also add strength. A transition plate is commonly installed between the slate's rails. The table will be stronger if it has a transition plate.

The table's bottom rail can be found at the foot. The rail apron can be described as a horizontal timber which is used for support of the rails. Bed shelf is another support. These are both made of solid wood. Post legs are perfect legs.

Corner pockets are holes in corners of the table. The angle at which the corner pocket entry opens is 142deg (+-1deg). The minimum opening width of the corner pocket can be 4-7/8 inches and maximum 5 1/8.

The horizontal line that runs horizontally along the table's center is called the head string. The head string starts at the second of the side pockets. The cloth can be drawn on by a player to mark the beginning of the string.

The foot spot lies at the bottom of the table. When a shooter breaks from the ball, the foot spot is the place the ball will land. It is also home to the nameplate.

When you are purchasing a new pool table, be sure to check the thickness of the slate. The slate should be at least 1" thick. There are many dealers who sell tables made with 7/8 inch slate. Though they will cost less, you do not receive the accuracy of a 1" slate.

Your pool table cloth is an important part. Modern billiard cloth is usually made of a blend of natural wool and synthetic nylon. Billiard felt is another component of the cloth. Some players prefer to use a different colored cloth. But it must be durable and smooth. You should brush the cloth once a month to keep it clean.
